Don’t Tell Me to Be Safe

After the Atlanta mass shootings occurred in March 2021, followed by incidents of anti-Asian violence across the country, including Seattle, non-Asian friends of Dr. Sara Kim, UWSOM Associate Dean for Educational Quality Improvement, began expressing concern for her safety, often concluding with the phrase, “be safe,” to express caring. Although she appreciates that sentiment, hearing it repeatedly caused Dr. Kim to ponder why the burden of safety was hers to bear? These thoughts evolved into an essay published this week in the online journal, Medium: Don’t Tell Me To Be Safe; The rising anti-Asian hatred and violence molded my broken heart into my ask of you
2020-21 UW MAP Awards

Since 1994, alumni and friends in the Multicultural Alumni Partnership have worked together to promote diversity at the UW and address issues of equity and diversity on our campuses and in our community. This year’s promising scholars range from early undergraduates who are still zeroing in on a major to those pursuing graduate and professional degrees.

Congratulations to third-year UWSOM Seattle student Jonathan Trejo for receiving this award. Jonathan studied biology at UC Berkeley and while in the San Francisco Bay Area, served his LGBTQ and Latinx communities with free HIV testing and counseling services. He has continued his HIV testing work with the LGBTQ community at Peer Seattle. Trejo wants to serve the communities he comes from and help improve equity in the medical field.
