Dear UW School of Medicine Community,
Over the past year, a group of UWSOM leaders have been working to initiate efforts to implement restorative justice principles and practices as an alternative to disciplinary and punitive measures to heal harms and resolve conflict. The first phase of this work involved listening sessions with a small number of students and faculty within our medical education community to better understand the issues around racism, specifically anti-Black racism, that are present in our environment. As was the intention, that effort has informed us for the next phase in our process.
We realize that we must engage in both restorative justice for members of our community who are being harmed as well as systemic transformation processes to become the anti-racist organization that we envision, one in which all members of the community feel safe and can thrive. The next step in this work is the selection of an expert consultant team to help guide us.
Over the last few months several consultant teams have been interviewed. We have now selected two experienced, diverse, multi-disciplinary teams as finalists. Before a final selection is made, we want to invite all members of the SOM community to attend virtual presentations by each group and provide feedback.
Dates and times for each presentation are below and the biographies of the two teams are attached below. The presentations will be in a webinar format. As such, we invite you to send questions ahead of the webinars by using this link to questions for consultants. There will also be a live Q&A. Each presentation will be recorded and distributed broadly for those unable to attend the live presentations.
Meet the finalist consulting teams:
Sincerely,
Paul G. Ramsey, M.D.

Financial Aid Updates
REMINDER: If you want to reduce your loan, please email the School of Medicine Financial Aid Office at somfao@uw.edu, rather than commenting on your financial aid status on the MyUW portal. All comments made on the MyUW portal are reviewed by the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). Due to the unique nature of medical school budgets, your loan could be incorrectly adjusted, which is why you should contact the School of Medicine Financial Aid Office instead.
The AAMC FIRST program has an excellent library with videos and recorded webinars about financial aid. We recommend reviewing these videos in May:

Learning Environment Corner
Welcome to our inaugural post! We will update you weekly on news from the learning environment, including new and ongoing initiatives and issues.
This week we are featuring the Student Arm of the Learning Environment Committee (LEC). The committee was formed to ensure the best educational experiences for our medical students, staff, and faculty by continuously and proactively addressing, monitoring, and responding to issues in the learning environment across the WWAMI region.
Membership in the Student Arm includes: Deans, Block Faculty, College Faculty, FCM Faculty, Clerkship Directors, Clerkship Administrators, Department Chairs, Student Affairs, Rural Programs, OHCE, CLIME, Communications, Data, Evaluation, EQI, members at large, and of course, student leadership. The LEC aims to achieve representation from across the School of Medicine and WWAMI so that its members can benefit from rich perspectives.
This month we are excited to welcome our newest LEC member, Dr. Barb Doty, regional clinical dean for Alaska WWAMI.
